Drew McLellan iPhone App: In case you want to carry me in your pocket!

Screen shot 2010-02-24 at 12.02.54 AM True confession time….I feel a little silly.  And yet a little smart at the same time.

Let me get to the smart part first.  Here’s what I know to be true:

  • Our interaction with the web is shifting very quickly to mobile devices.  It’s predicted by 2020 it will be the prevailing tool we use to access the internet.
  • The new iPad (released in March/April) will bring a new slew of people to the Apple platforms, including the world of apps.
  • For those who turn up their nose at Apple, the Droid smartphone is taking off like a rocket.
  • I create a fair amount of content but it’s tough to find it all in one place.
  • Apps are going to be a vital mainstream marketing tool soon and MMG needs to understand that world.
  • I am too big to fit into your pocket.

Now the silly part.  I’m not a celebrity, famous or even one of social media’s superstars like Chris Brogan, Seth Godin or Dan Pink.  So to announce that you should download me onto your iPhone or iTouch (or Droid) feels a bit presumptuous.  (BTW — it’s free if that helps!)

But…I predict this will become commonplace shortly and then I’ll just be an early adopter.  Besides, it really is the only way I’ll fit into your pocket!

And to entice you to download it… I’ve started creating some Marketing Minute podcasts.  The easiest way to get them — the app.  Short and sweet — now you can even take my voice along with you.

On my app, you’ll find:

  • The new podcasts
  • My blog posts
  • My posterous journal
  • My tweets
  • Links to my books
  • My guest posts on IowaBiz and Marketing Profs Daily Fix
  • Links to my Facebook, LinkedIn and FriendFeed accounts
  • God only knows what else!

I hope you’ll indulge me and give it a try.  You can access it here (clicking on this link will launch iTunes).

If you’ve got a Droid, you can see your version of the app here (to download, just search for my name in your apps market.

You mean I can have DM anywhere I go? My life is complete!!! 😉

  2. Drew,

One word : brilliant! Can’t wait to reach WiFi and download your app (on my genuine iPhone V1). Will it be available internationally? Some apps aren’t. In the list of smart people with iPhone apps, Roger von Oech has a FAB “Whack Pack” creative tool available out there.

Although this may seem like a small step… it’s not. I think it insights the leap forward we’re going to make through new Mobile abilities. Drew, seems you never miss an opportunity to lead into the right direction! Thanks for us all.

    Hi Drew

Two funny things: clicked the link to I-tunes and baffled, first time on I-Tunes so at a loss how to get the “app” – but no doubt I’ll figure it out.
Second funny thing, my personal librarian: this morning – while enjoying my first cup of coffee of the day, still in “jimjams” – I started reading Dan Pink’s book Drive 😉 Coincidence?

  4. This is so cool. Just downloaded the app. I want to have an app that let’s customers see our Twitter updates and be able to choose napkin and tablecloth colors. Can’t wait to hear how you put this all together.

    Drew,
if you think it is silly to suggest that people download your app, think how completely crazy I feel about suggesting mine. (But thanks for including the link. I hope it does not impact too negatively on your credibility.)
    Happy apping.
    Jay

  6. Drew,

Totally cool. Must reach for my Droid. But what I’m really waiting to learn is the “how can I do this too” piece.

  7. Thanks everyone for your enthusiastic response. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the app and what else I could do to make it useful/helpful.

I promise…a how to post is in the works!

Thank you for the Droid App. Nice you though of us. Totally cool idea, love it, love it. who wrote your app? I need one written for our company.

  10. Hey Drew. Wow! Well done. This is fantastic innovation. Now I get to hear you on my ipod whenever I want … particularly when I’m training stuck on the treadmill for an hour at a time. So now I’ve got you on my computer to read and chat with, and in my ears. Guess I will be I will be virtually taking you to places of this country and world you never thought you would be travelling too. How cool is this? Fabo, dear Drew, simply Fabo!

  11. You all have made the launch a very fun day — thank you. I promise…a detailed how to post is coming with all the details.

Then, you can decide if this is for you!

Very ineteresting, I carry a blackberry for work and an iphone for life! Good Luck!

  13. Connie Reece says:

How could I *not* download the iPhone app? I love the thought of carrying a little bitty you, snacking on beef jerky, around in my pocket. It must be getting crowded in there, though, because you’re joining the pocket versions of CC, Chris, and Brian Solis.

Seriously, this is prescient. I find I’m using my mobile more and more for consuming content. This is more than a fad, it’s a trend. Congrats for getting ahead of the curve by going mobile with your content.

  14. Connie,

I knew I forgot something on the app! The beef jerky selection! ;-} I’m happy to be in your pocket…no matter how crowded it gets!

Hope we get to see each other again soon — but in the meantime, it’s good to know I am hanging with you this way!

    Drew
