What is an ooVoo?

Drewgavincomposite1 One of the best things about today’s technology is that the world is a much smaller place.  With free tools like skype and even the taken for granted e-mail, we can stay connected to the world.

ooVoo takes that to a whole new level.  Video conferencing with up to six people.  All you need is a webcam, a headset with a mic and the free download of ooVoo (both mac and PC).

To create some buzz, ooVoo is doing a pretty cool thing.  MyooVoo Day.  (Check out Mack’s comments on the event.)

For this week, they’ve lined up some marketing and blogging gurus and each of those folks is hosting a 1-2 hour chat with people just like you (the complete list here).  Big names on this list…so check it out!

Best of all, for each session being held — they are donating $1,500 to the Frozen Pea Fund in support of Susan Reynolds and breast cancer research.

Okay….so we’ve got chatting with smart people about marketing.  We’ve got supporting Susan and fighting breast cancer.  We’ve got cool and FREE technology.  I’m so in!

I e-mailed my Age of Conversation cohort, Gavin Heaton, and said….who cares if we’re not famous or even that smart like the rest of the hosts — let’s see if we can host a session! Fortunately the guys at crayon (the genius behind the campaign) lowered their standards and let us in.

What are you doing Saturday the 16th (or Sunday the 17th if you’re in Gavin’s neck of the woods) If you think spending 15 minutes with Gavin and I would be fun….sign up here.  4 pm EST.  8 am Aussie time.  Compare your timezone here.

Thanks to my friends Scott Monty and Greg Verdino for bringing this opportunity to all of us.

    Hi Drew,

I’ve pointed out this opportunity to quite a few people I thought would be interested… but I was just wondering, do you think this is a hard sell based on the newness of the ooVoo platform or the fact that its video chat?

I have to admit, my hesitation at signing up is because of the video platform.

We do a lot of webex seminar’s for our customers. Letting them ask questions and walking through the software. And the introduction of a video option for a business planning seminar is intriguing, but not if it scares off a good chunk of people.

Just wondering if you had any thoughts on it.

    Chelle,

I think the ooVoo Day sign ups have proven that at least among marketing people and bloggers — it’s an easy sell. Of course, I would argue we’re more likely to experiment with this sort of thing too.

So the real question is…will all of us early adopters be loud enough to bring in the more main stream?

    Have you tried it?

I haven’t! But I’m so tempted. I’m a fan of several of you who are hosting. But like I said, I’m still not all that sold on the video aspect. No one needs to see me at home on a Saturday. I’m just sayin.

Internally though, I might pitch the idea of smaller seminar’s with that one on one feel. There’s a real feeling of value added with that idea.

    Chelle,

Well, to be fair, I am sure it’s mostly a M-F sort of thing usually. It’s just that Gavin and I are trying to bridge the time zones and still make it work for us and anyone who might want to chat.

Come on….sign up for one of our sessions. You could even have curlers in your hair. We don’t care!!

Then, you can say you’re an early adopter — willing to try just about anything in the quest for knowledge!

Wow! What a great opportunity. I like the idea! What a unique way to interact with an audience. Glad to see the crayon folks let you guys join in the fun!

I’m a bit bummed that the Mac version is not available yet. Sigh. Guess I’ll have to tune in next time.

  • Gavin Heaton

Hey Chris … Mac version is available from http://www.myoovooday.com — the download is just not available on the main site as yet. Let us know if you can’t find it.

Chelle … You certainly are welome to join us. And if you are worried about the video, just don’t activate your camera. Easy.

  • Drew McLellan

    Chris,

Go to http://www.myoovooday.com/ and click on the download link. You’ll find the mac version there.
