The speed of change

October 23rd, 2009 · 6 Comments · Business owner/leader stuff

I was checking out a presentation by Frank Striefler from TBWA\CHIAT\DAY & Media Arts Lab which is really smart and thought-provoking (check it out by clicking here) and was completely wow'd by a video he included in the presentation.

Not only is it well produced, but the facts and figures will remind you to stop and appreciate what a remarkable time we're living in.  The world of communications (in the broadest sense of the word) is literally changing before our eyes.

I'd love to hear which statistic or commentary struck you as the most remarkable.

LOL Drew “Speed of change” is indeed the correct word watching the video. Boy, you have to be a speed reader sometimes.
But we always have the pause and slide-back button.

Great video and slide-show too (IMHO comprehensible for many, even without the “notes”). Sharp remarks, specially liked slide 55 “Don’t start with the platforms” – as always it is not about the tools, it’s all about the strategy.

    Karin,

Yup — I thought he did a great job on the presentation as well.

What I said to him was….I’d love to hear him deliver it because I’m sure he augments it with stories, which would humanize the numbers even more.

Great video! My favorite part was the quote from Ray Kurzweil about the evolution of computers. It’s exciting to think about what will happen next!

I’m going to have to say the statistic that surprised me the most was that viewers are willing to pay for ad-free programming. We’ve already seen an increase in in-programming endorsements (for instance, music producers would pay big bucks to get their songs featured in GLEE), and this trend will only continue as the same programming we see on TV is also found on the internet. Why pay for both TV and Internet ads when you can pay for one in-program endorsement and reach both audiences?

I’d also like to share a video that shares a lot of similar statistics about the social media revolution. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIFYPQjYhv8

It’s going to be exciting to see where we are in 2, 5, even 10 years down the road!

    Ashley,

And just think — all of that evolution has taken place in our lifetime. The rate of change is mind boggling.

    Megan,

I expect it’s a case of why close down one potential revenue stream, when you can have two instead of just one?

What people say they will do…and what they will actually do are often two different things, though. I think that would all depend on the price point.
